Email

Email is electronic mail. It is a method by which computer users can exchange messages with each other over a network.  With email you can also send attachments, which are files that can be documents or photos or whatever. Email is the most frequently used application over the internet.

All you need to do is open your email program, like Outlook , type in the email address of the person to whom you are sending the email to, then type your message. Connect to the internet and click on send.

Your message will go to your Internet Service Providers mail server called a SMTP server. This stands for simple mail transfer protocol. The  SMTP server transfers the mail from server to server until it gets to the recipients mail server, where it can be downloaded to their computer. The server that you log onto to get your mail is called a POP server. POP stands for Post Office Protocol. When an email is sent to you it is stored on the server until you access it. Once you have logged on the email will be transmitted to your computer.

An email address is made up of certain components just like a web address.

                        The @ at Sign       Country

                                    ½                   ½

For example jaberwokey@ananzi.co.za

½                                           ½

                     Username          Domain name

There is also internet email, like the well known Hotmail. With internet mail,        the email is kept on the server, it is not saved to you computer.

Chat

Chatting is one of the most popular features on the internet. The real name is IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and it provides real time communication with people all over the world. It consists of networks if IRC servers around the world to which users connect.

How it usually works is you download a chat client like  mIRC.

Then read the instructions and install the client. Then you run the client program and connect to an IRC server. You would then usually join a channel, each channel is devoted to a different topic. You can have public conversations with everyone on that particular channel or you can have a private chat with one member.

Another interesting program is ICQ (I Seek You). It is an instant-messaging program that lets you communicate with friends and colleagues in real time. To Download ICQ Click Here

Newsgroups

Usenet is a world-wide distributed discussion system. It consists of a set of "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically by subject. "Articles" or "messages" are "posted" to these newsgroups by people on computers with the appropriate software -- these articles are then broadcast to other interconnected computer systems via a wide variety of networks.

Taken from: What is Usenet FAQ.

To start enjoying this  tool we call the Usenet you need a two things: a news client and a news server. Most people already have a news client installed on their computer. Netscape and Internet Explorer both have a built in news client. Next you need a news server to read news from, you should be able to get this from your ISP.

You need to configure your news client to use your  News account.  You will need to enter the server name, user name, and password. You will then download the group list , there are several thousand newsgroups available. Once it has completed you will be able to read articles. download files, and even post your own articles for others to read.

Shopping

More people are using the internet to shop every year. Internet has become part of the shopping experience. People are finding that online shopping has many benefits, you can shop for almost any item and compare prices from different vendors. Prices are often low as the internet shop does not have the same overheads as a normal store and they are open 24hrs a day, so you can shop whenever it is convenient to you. All of this from your computer. All the financial transactions should be done on a secure server, making it safe to use your card.

The process is almost the same as shopping at your local store. You will enter the store, for example amazon.com ,by clicking the link. Once at the site you choose the category which you are interested in, then be displayed by a list of products with prices and often a photo. You then pick the item you want by clicking a to buy link. You will then be transported to a page where you fill in your details and credit card number. You will then approve the price and be given a chance to cancel. Your purchase is then shipped to you. You can normally download all your software purchases right there and then. Its all as easy as that.

Drivers

A driver is a small program that controls a hardware device. A device can be anything from a web cam to your mouse or printer. The driver allows the computer to communicate with the device.

Windows has a lot of device drivers built into it. That is what is known as plug and play. You simply plug the device in, windows detects it and loads the driver automatically. But windows will not always have the driver you need, so you will not be able to get the device to work without the correct driver. Time to start searching for the driver you need. The internet is the best place for finding drivers, even for old or obscure equipment.

DriverGuide.com has a huge database of drivers and links to manufactures of hardware. If the driver is available you will probably find it through DriverGuide.com Its free, all you have to do is join.

Search

To search for the driver you need it is best to start by searching by manufacturer. The manufacturer will usually have a web site with the available drivers on it for download.

If you don't know the manufacturer then the next best thing to search by is the fcc-id of the component. The fcc-id should be written somewhere on the component. If there is no fcc-id then do a search by model number or part number of the component.
